Who it's for
Traders who want an S&P position working overnight while they sleep, on micros only.
§ 01 How it trades
The rules, in order
- Builds 15-minute candles and a session VWAP with a one-standard-deviation band.
- Goes long when price had closed below the lower band and a green candle closes back above it. Short is the mirror at the upper band.
- Trades only when the market is ranging. A choppiness filter skips trending nights.
- Fixed 40-point stop and 40-point target (about $200 each per MES contract).
§ 02 Market context
How the S&P micro trades overnight
Between the US close and the London open, index futures often trade in a narrower, rotational range than in New York hours. Night Owl is built for those nights: it waits for price to poke outside a one-standard-deviation VWAP band, then trades only once a 15-minute candle closes back inside.
Its choppiness filter is the other half of the idea. On nights when the S&P trends steadily in one direction, a band fade keeps getting run over, so the filter skips them.
When this setup struggles
- A trending night that the choppiness filter doesn't catch in time.
- Overnight news moves price through the band and keeps going.
- A trade opened in Asia can stay open into the next day, so you carry it through London and the New York open until it hits the stop, the target or the 3:55 PM ET close.
§ 03 Risk and settings
Risk rules
- One position at a time. It won't trade if your account already has an MES position or working order.
- Fixed 40-point stop on every trade.
- No daily loss limit.
- A trade opened overnight can stay open into the next day. Anything still open is closed at 3:55 PM ET.
- Start times shift an hour earlier in winter (the session is anchored to midnight UTC).
Before you turn it on
- Load it on a 5-minute MES chart. It builds the 15-minute candles itself.
- MES only. It won't trade if the account already has an MES position or working order.
- Mind the clock change: the session is anchored to midnight UTC, so start times shift an hour earlier in winter.
- It has no daily loss limit, so size it so a 40-point stop is a loss you're comfortable with.
Settings like contracts are adjustable. This bot has no built-in daily loss limit.
§ 04 Questions
Night Owl: common questions
Why does Night Owl only trade MES?
It is built and set for the micro S&P. It checks for other MES positions and orders so it never stacks with Coil Breaker on the same account.
How much is the stop?
A fixed 40 points on every trade, about $200 per MES contract. The target is also 40 points.
Can a trade stay open after the Asia session?
Yes. Entries happen roughly 10:15 PM to 3:00 AM ET, but an open trade can run into the next day. Anything still open is closed at 3:55 PM ET.
